We knew in 1912. We were told again that oil companies would cause catastrophic climate change in the 1970s. We didn't listen. Now even if we stop all emissions today we have 100 years of warming to look forward to.

We made a choice in a late 1800s - early 1900s to go to a petroleum-based world. We had a perfect opportunity to go to a plant-based agricultural society but we went into an extraction-based society. Destroying our old growth forests and pumping poison in the air was avoidable at one time.

Looking at the comments, I have to disagree with the whole" humanity will die but the earth will survive" type of thinking. It devalues the complex systems and biodiversity that took millenia to develop aswell as the still existing indigenous people who developed reciprocal relationships with it.
