Ordinary people are also complicit through consumption and apathy, and should cut spending and behavior to protest.

The framing itself is wrong: the planet will survive regardless, it is human civilization that is at risk.

“Slight correction. The planet isn’t dying we are. Once that’s done and we’re gone the planet will rebound. It always does”

Commenters recall historical warnings ignored since 1912 and 1970s
A reply notes warnings about oil companies causing catastrophic climate change date back to 1912 and were repeated in the 1970s, arguing decades of inaction lock in a century of further warming.
“We knew in 1912. We were told again that oil companies would cause catastrophic climate change in the 1970s. We didn't listen.”

We knew in 1912. We were told again that oil companies would cause catastrophic climate change in the 1970s. We didn't listen. Now even if we stop all emissions today we have 100 years of warming to look forward to.

Remember if it weren't for the lies and distortions by Maureen Dowd printed in that metro rag the New York Times attacking candidate Al Gore we'd be 25 years into the battle against Global Warming. The WTC towers might be standing too.

Some reframe debate around planet's survival versus humanity's
Multiple commenters push back on the "planet is dying" framing itself, arguing the planet will endure and rebound while it is human and other life that will suffer or go extinct.

The greedy already have sufficient for even extravagant dreams, any additional wealth has no real benefit to them. The greed is a mental sickness. Everyone else suffers and even the guilty don't really benefit.

Extreme humidity is already killing people who work outside. In the hottest places, a few hours past what the body can handle turns into heatstroke, and that danger spreads with every extra degree. Hold them accountable. Make them pay. The poorest already are.

Thread turns to personal responsibility and consumption
Several commenters argue individuals share blame through consumption habits, streaming, flying and shopping, urging cuts to spending and donations to biodiversity charities.

Everyone can protest against climate change just by cutting their consumption by 80% - ouchhhh but doable - spend less on clothes, food, your house, and travel - give what you save to charities that fund biodiversity 🌱

Replies split over collective versus corporate blame
Some commenters extend blame to boardroom families who "sell out" their own descendants, while others cite the well-known line that climate disaster is already here, just unevenly distributed.
“And the vast majority of the people in those board rooms have kids and grandkids... but are willing to sell THEM out for yet another fistful of coin.”

Oh yeah. Siberia has been choking on smoke for years. The people who live there are the ones forced to breathe it — dealing with polluted air, recurring wildfire smoke, and the long-term health consequences of environmental degradation.

Commenters echo the corruption framing, some in German
Early replies pick up the theme that the destruction is collateral damage from decades of political bribery to protect stock prices and dividends, with magicelectric.bsky.social posting in German.
“Der Planet stirbt nicht, er wird umgebracht. Nicht mit Absicht, aber als Kollateralschaden.”
— magicelectric.bsky.social -
It’s as simple as that.

It’s interesting because that particular slight of hand lets people who condemn the “Holodomer” as a genocide excuse the deliberate starvation of the Irish that eliminated 1/4 of the population as “not a genocide” because it was decided by individual property rights and profit seeking in part.

We made a choice in a late 1800s - early 1900s to go to a petroleum-based world. We had a perfect opportunity to go to a plant-based agricultural society but we went into an extraction-based society. Destroying our old growth forests and pumping poison in the air was avoidable at one time.

201 million years ago a mass extinction event cleared the way for the dinosaurs to evolve and rule the planet. 66 million years ago, another one killed the dinosaurs and eventually cleared the way for humans to rule the planet. I wonder what will follow us?

The planet will fine. It’s the life on it which will suffer and perish.

We are all being slowly killed by capitalism. It was always a deeply flawed and resource- and time-limited system that harmed more than it helped.

Yes and people need to stop buying stuff they do not need! Stop giving them money by paying for streaming and still watching ads. Stop scrolling all day long. Just stop.

Also reflect on our collective apathy and privileged priorities. We keep consuming, watching, flying, driving, living in excess, enabling ... Not acting like it is immediate; not believing we can make a difference
