Hundreds of Bluesky users mocked Altman's framing by applying the same 'inefficient use of limited supply' logic to his own money, blood, organs, and oxygen, and to broader anti-landlord/anti-rentier sentiment.
“I would argue the same about our precious supply of oxygen being used in Sam Altman”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes people owning RAM for their own PCs is a waste and instead should be saved for data centers "It’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."

BREAKING: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says having RAM in personal computers is an inefficient use of the world’s limited DRAM supply, arguing it would be better allocated to data centers, per Tom’s Hardware

3. Some applications are going to work just fine with smaller models on local hardware. If people still have machines with the memory to run those models laying around, that will cost OpenAI business. Also, once RAM suppliers catch up and Moore's law resumes operation, the capability of local hardware is going to steadily improve. Were it not for…

I saw someone comment this in another thread - "I only use my car 5% of the time but I'm sure Sam would prefer to own my car so he can run a taxi service and depreciate the hardware at record speed while I have to negotiate a schedule with him to use his resources." And it's such a perfect analogy. Absolute fucking ghouls

Sam Altman says its bad that everyone's personal computers are using the world's limited supply of memory chips. "It’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAMs sitting in their own computer, and being used 5% of the time. Like, you

Sam wants your RAM https://www. tomshardware.com/tech-industry /data-centers/openai-ceo-says-its-quite-terrible-for-your-pc-to-have-ram-sam-altman-says-data-centers-offer-better-utilization

next having electricity at home is inefficient .. just donate water and energy to Data centers

Hold on a second. #1 contains a diverging value judgement rather than just a description of reality. Its truth value varies wildly depending on who's reading it. It is only under-utilization by Sam Altman's definition of utility, but not my definition of utility. I want hardware to be sitting idle in people's homes most of the time instead of…

Man if these guys really want maximum utilization, what are they doing buying NVIDIA GPUs and high end Xeons and EPYCs? They should be running the $5 Celeron processor! One that is so slow it is at 100% load all the time! That's *load maximization* the proper way. /s

Thirty years ago Sun Microsystems was the darling of the industry and they really wanted everyone to start using thin servers. For various reasons it didn’t happen. Thanks, in part, to Microsoft trying to tie the web to Windows via ActiveX, etc. Today Sam Altman of OpenAI would also like us all to use thin clients. He makes an argument for better…

Guy with the most DRAM in the world thinks it's terrible he doesn't have all of it.It would be more efficient to ban cars in favor of mass transit. It would be more efficient if people only lived in apartment complexes rather than standalone houses. Tons of things can be more "efficient" if you take away people's desire for privacy and ownership.

was about to post this as well. His view assumes that all usage is equal. Its like saying all GPUs should go to bitcoin mining because they get used more than regular computer use. That assumes there is an real benefit to bitcoin being mined(spoiler, there isn't).

Sounds like he doesn't want us owning our own computers, beyond what's needed to use his AI slop. Guess he'd hate my tech state, mostly a mix of self hosting, open source software, and pretending AI doesn't exist (and turning it off if no alternatives). Sam Altman having all of that money in personal bank accounts is an inefficient use of the world's limited fiscal reserves. It would be better allocated to the working class. Time to seize his assets and make him an example, IMO.
-
I agree with him. And I'll gladly donate my 128GB of DDR5 if it means OpenAI and Anthropic will be nationalized to ensure equal access to resources. Central planning will surely create the most efficient system
-
Kind of a biased read of what he actually said, which is that local inference is wasteful compared to shared resources in datacenters because it tends to have very low utilization. Which is of course true, but misses the point.

Sam Altman: it's terrible for people to have something they rarely use when other uses exist Why yes Sam we agree, we should take all Billionaires wealth and distribute it https://www. tomshardware.com/tech-industry /data-centers/openai-ceo-says-its-quite-terrible-for-your-pc-to-have-ram-sam-altman-says-data-centers-offer-better-utilization

You jest but I think that's the end point of the AI singularity: labour erased by machines, infinite PRODUCT TM from self-replicating factories. The rich will soon ask the question: "do we need so many people?".
-
He could always just rent PCs usage time from anyone if he wants more RAM. Maybe using a sort of "token" system to calculate the remuneration?
-
Again, the underlying purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill while removing from the skilled the ability to access wealth. removing people's ability to run their own AI, further entrenches this outcome.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has criticized the use of high-end DRAM in personal computers for local AI tasks, suggesting it is an inefficient use of a limited global resource compared to centralized cloud clusters. - https://www. notebookcheck.net/Quite-terrib le-Sam-Altman-says-PCs-waste-the-world-s-limited-DRAM-supply.1438393.0.html

Meanwhile he is out here trying to make the planet unlivable so you'll have to buy Perriair.
