AI stans: It's just marketed wrong. That's the problem. You're just listening to the wrong people about this. It's not this big evil thing Sam Altman, King of AI: No one should have any RAM but me

Sam Altman complains that RAM in YOUR computer is WASTED, should be in the Cloud instead 'Quite TERRIBLE to have everybody have a bunch of world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer'
-
Nonsense, spin up a fab and hammer out as much DRAM as the market demands. This gets to the whole rental paradigm , we just have fancy terminals without a lot of horsepower and everything is handled server side - permanently connected , permanently racking up compute time/ram time whatever is billable. Rather than have a small powerful mini…

> 1. Local inference can cause a large under-utilization of resources from users that do not run local inference hardware at capacity over the hardwares lifespan. This is under-utilization and under-utilization is not optimal from an economics perspective.Under utilization is not optimal only in one perspective. Maximum utilization of resources…

He's why I had to pay $700 for $250 worth of RAM on my recent build. Yeet him.

First, #capitalism came to us with a sensible trade-off. "Yes, free and unregulated markets may lead to exploitation and ramping inequalities - but as long as we keep a healthy competitive playing field everyone with enough skills and talent will have a chance to compete". Then a whole generation of MBA graduates was taught that the very thing…

BREAKING: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says having RAM in personal computers is an inefficient use of the world's limited DRAM supply, arguing it would be better allocated to data centers, per Tom's Hardware
-
Sounds like a weird form of tech communism to me. If these jackass ceos were telling us it's better off if we let companies send us our weekly allowance of food every month, or allowance of shared electricity everyone would freak out since it's literally as communist as you can get. These people just want to do away with personal computing all…

I think OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's body having blood in it is an inefficient use of the world's limited blood supply but no-one's ever given me an interview about it.

Maybe we should allocate his wealth to the public for maximum utilization. https://www. tomshardware.com/tech-industry /data-centers/openai-ceo-says-its-quite-terrible-for-your-pc-to-have-ram-sam-altman-says-data-centers-offer-better-utilization # OpenAI # AI # Computing

Sam Altman says it's better for RAM to be in a data center than in your PC. These people don't want you to own powerful computers anymore, they want you to rent them
-
Still wrong to accuse the Ai companies. It’s the producers that decide that they are ACTIVELY CHANGING their production Use your brain for once in your lifetime. Ai companies aren’t forcing anyone to change what they produce Everyone involved just wants to make more money. So there you go - you want to live in capitalism but you don’t want to…

Open models are the way to go. What Sam Altman is advocating for is centralization and oligopoly, or even a monopoly, so early movers & those with access to cheap capital can keep collecting rent. Otherwise, his company's whole business model collapses.
-
R
Of course he would say that! After all, he has a business of AI cloud subscriptions... "OpenAI isn't exactly threatened by some laptops and gaming rigs just yet, but local AI could mean people one day paying less for subscriptions to models like GPT-6 Luna if they have the power to run them at home. Altman's talk suggests that the company would…

100% +oxygen +energy + water are only used intermittently. Humans don't work 24 hours a day either. How can we put that wasted resource into my machine, soon to be funded with other people's money, that we use to kill people, hack the world, and eventually ask for a taxpayer bailout while paying almost no tax on a 100B dollars of wealth created in…
-
Sam Altman is an inefficient use of money. It should be distributed through the wider community. Sam Altman has already had more than his allocation for this lifetime and should not be allocated any more.

-
The invisible hand of the market is only “failing” because a lot of the companies that could spin up new RAM fabs are convinced this AI boom will blow over before they get the new facilities operational. It takes time to create new RAM facilities and nobody wants to get stuck holding the bag making penny RAM if the current demand trajectory…

Sam Altman's wealth would be better allocated to other people.

Sam Altman wants to bust up small, privately held PCs and collectivize those resources within large data centers, so their utilization can be efficiently coordinated by a central planner (himself). Sam, buddy! We tried this 100 years ago in Russia, and it didn't work then either. https://www. tomshardware.com/tech-industry…

What? Lol no issues with a spreadsheet on mine, and what’s this about a ceo or politician cutting off my phone? Besides ridiculously spec’ed phones, I can go out and buy an infinite number of laptops or desktops. Some components for high end GAMING builds aren’t cheap, but quite literally there are hundreds of builds are ready for pickup.

Wow crazy the one thing that makes it possible for working people to OWN and STORE things in a way that cannot be stolen from us or erased from existence is something that Guy Who Wants Us To Own Nothing And Access Things Only At His Personal Whims thinks is a waste? What a surprise.

Guy who says having your own computer memory is 'terrible' can fxxk right off. In fact I have a pile of old ddr that I'm happy to burn in front of him just for the hell of it. https://www. tomshardware.com/tech-industry /data-centers/openai-ceo-says-its-quite-terrible-for-your-pc-to-have-ram-sam-altman-says-data-centers-offer-better-utilization
