Cursor launches Origin, a GitHub rival, hours before GitHub itself goes down
Cursor's new git-hosting platform for Pro, Teams and Enterprise plans debuted the same day a nearly seven-hour GitHub outage knocked out pull requests, SSO and Copilot.
What to know
- Cursor's Origin launched in early beta on all paid plans (Pro, Teams, Enterprise), offering repo hosting, pull requests, code browsing and two-way GitHub sync — but not for free-tier users.
- GitHub suffered a six-hour-42-minute global degradation about 3.5 hours after Origin's launch, hitting pull requests, issues, API, file downloads, enterprise SSO and Copilot, and briefly disrupting Origin's own GitHub-sync feature.
- Coverage frames the launch as Cursor capitalizing on GitHub's reliability problems; developer reaction is largely skeptical, citing distrust of AI-company custody of code, Cursor's reported ownership ties to Elon Musk/xAI, and a preference for decentralized alternatives.
- Namespace/codebase names cannot be changed once claimed during the beta, and Origin currently lacks its own CI, relying on integrations like Depot and Buildkite.
The dispute Whether Origin's launch alongside GitHub's outage is a savvy, well-timed product move or an opportunistic exploitation of a rival's failure by a company developers don't fully trust. · positions read across 65 posts and comments
Trusting Cursor/xAI with source code is a bad idea given ownership and past controversies.

Press casts Cursor as exploiting GitHub frustration
TechCrunch and other outlets described Cursor as moving to capture developers frustrated with GitHub's outages and performance degradation, positioning Origin as a direct rival to the long-dominant platform.
“For as long as anyone can remember, GitHub has been the de facto code host preferred by a majority of developers.”

I think the biggest value of choosing gitlab is the social network. I think federation is the right way, but it seems a mastodon vs linkedin problem. Would be good if there would be bridges between all those fediverses. A nice one is also ngit [0][0]

It’s ironic that git is a distributed version control system but the first we did as a developer community was to centralize it around a service that goes down so much it has zero nines of availability. https:// venturebeat.com/infrastructure /cursor-launches-origin-code-hosting-platform-as-github-outage-exposes-opening-in-ai-coding-race

Commentary frames Origin's timing as capitalizing on GitHub's instability
The New Stack argued Origin's launch was made more compelling by GitHub's ongoing reliability problems, a framing echoed across tech outlets covering the coincidence of the launch and outage.
“Cursor, which is now owned by Elon, who tried very hard to get all manner of data about citizens with his intrusions? ... He'll use it to feed Grok.”

I feel like this misses the value of something like Github or Origin entirely though. There's nothing terribly difficult about hosting a git server. The UX and pull requests capabilities are a little involved, but there are alternatives today. What makes Github special is the ecosystem and integrations. Developers voice distrust of Cursor's ownership and AI custody of code
HN commenters raised concerns about hosting source code with an AI company reportedly linked to Elon Musk and xAI's Grok, citing recent controversies, alongside broader worries about giving an AI agent custody of proprietary code.

I really hope more people would use Tangled (https://tangled.org/)You get: - Self hosting your git hosting (if you want) - Self hosting your issues/PRs (if you want) - Self hosting your CI (if you want) - Github-like social features (I have one account, I can follow, star, add issues and PRs to any repo on tangled) It's built on ATProto, so even…

Having an AI company host your source code is giving your source code to an untrustworthy agent who might break their sandbox and might use your source code to accomplish a task that they have been given in their testing ground, for testing purposes only, that would definitely positively not ever be used for non-testing purposes.

GitHub suffers a six-hour global outage the same day
Roughly three and a half hours after Origin's launch, GitHub's status page showed a widespread degradation lasting six hours and 42 minutes, with error rates near 20% on pull requests, issues and the API and near 50% on archive/raw file downloads; enterprise SSO (SAML, OIDC, SCIM, Team Sync) and Copilot also failed. The outage briefly impaired Origin's own GitHub-sync feature.

Cursor publishes Origin docs detailing beta limits
Documentation clarified Origin is available only on Pro, Teams and Enterprise plans (not free plans), that codebase namespaces can't be changed once claimed during the beta, and that repo access follows the namespace owner's privacy mode.

I do wonder if calling this "Origin" is going to result in semantic misinterpretations by LLMs. Ie saying,> "hey can you push to origin main?"now has two separate meanings.A LLM may inadvertently push your code to a new provider without you knowing. It's walking a thin line between genius-growth-move and domain typosquatting.

What I don't understand from the blog post is what's different in this offering than github - is it just the agentic tie ins where I can ask my agent to make changes while browsing the PR?Are there any fundamental differences, ie ways of working that solve the worktrees problem?

cursor origin is probably great but incredibly dishonest of Cursor investors to just shit on GitHub knowing full well 1) Origin doesn't support free users 2) Origin doesn't have any CI (where GitHub has been struggling bc of #1)

Would love if you focus on performance. A big reason I have to have custom software is that agents can act much faster than humans but SaaS software is usually not well-designed enough to handle high RPS so rate-limits are low. I can easily outperform commercial hosts myself. At the least, it would be sick to have separate tenancy so that I could…

I actually think the cursor acquisition will destroy value, unless completely left alone by Elon. Cursor's strength is its brand, and they should add more services, but should not integrate with Grok whatsoever.

git is such a good platform for decentralized tech. Forfeiting that advantage is just criminal. What I really want (and almost have) is a local GitHub for me and agents. With 4+ orchestrators working with a ton of subagents, things get difficult to coordinate. Several days ago, I went back to plain git and it was real slow and abrasive to work…

Physical custody of our work is going to be an important discussion for industry. ie where does your code live and how do you access it?Every agent platform is moving toward you living with them, logging into them, working on their remote computers, only accessing your code and product artifacts with them.
