Gas prices hit $6.79/gallon, reigniting debate over oil dependence
A social post about record fuel costs sparks conversation on EVs, inflation, and energy policy.
What to know
- Gas prices reached $6.79 per gallon, prompting users to question the viability of oil-based transportation.
- Commenters are divided: some cite historical inflation context, others tout EV adoption as the solution, and some blame current political leadership.
- The affordability of EVs itself is contested, with users noting that while charging costs are low, vehicle purchase prices remain a barrier.
The dispute Whether current high gas prices are primarily a policy failure (warranting political blame) or a structural market shift (necessitating energy transition) drives the sharpest divide in the conversation. · positions read across 44 posts and comments

Current high prices are result of political decisions and are unfairly blamed on broader forces.

High prices are troubling because EVs remain unaffordable for many people.

Current prices, while high nominally, are not unprecedented when adjusted for historical inflation.

“During the oil embargo of the early '70s, I paid over $3.50 a gallon for gas And I made $4 an hour. Adjusted for fifty years inflation, that's pretty close to $9.00 a gallon.”

Political blame and counterarguments emerge in thread
Commenters blamed Trump administration policies for gas prices, while others cited high inflation-adjusted historical prices or promoted EV solutions. One commenter sarcastically referenced promised Trump policies like $2 gas.

I bought a used EV 2.5 years ago. Best decision I ever made. I can brass this out. Drove my Xterra 4x4 to get some bags of water softener salt. Second time its been on the road since this war started—used only when needed.

I remember those days. Gas was rationed (you could only buy on certain days), lines at the pumps were really long, and locking gas caps were common because thieves would siphon gas out of your tank.

$6.79 is cheap compared to Europe, and they survive. Americans are addicted to cheap gas, but you want to address climate change, don't you? I worked to feed that addiction, but it's time to seek help and get off it. More expensive gas helps with that because people will find ways to drive less.

Comments cite historical gas prices, current EV adoption, and environmental concerns. Some users report switching to electric vehicles or installing solar panels to avoid fuel costs.

During the oil embargo of the early ‘70s, I paid over $3.50 a gallon for gas And I made $4 an hour. Adjusted for fifty years inflation, that’s pretty close to $9.00 a gallon. And just a few years before that, it 35 cents a gallon. And you got Blue Chip stamps. Sometimes, history rhymes.

Hello from England. Cost £100 to fill my mid-sized family car @ the weekend. First time in my life I’ve gone over £100. We’re paying about £7.50 a gallon - we get it sold in litres so it’s looks cheaper (about 170p a litre or so). But we’ve had expensive petrol for years, $6.79 must be killing you.

6,79$ per gallon? That's under 1,8€ per Liter. Cute... We nearly had that before your orange pedophile Florida man went nuts in Iran and killed innocent people. Now we are at 2,26€/Liter, or 8,517176514$ per gallon. Stop whining and solve the mess, you've created.

$.99 gas was definitely a thing up through the late 90s, and possibly into the new millennia. In my mid-40's now so I had just started driving. I was also paid, I think, $5.25/hr @ 16. Graveyard shift. Fed min was $5.15 maybe? The fact that the fed min today is only $2 more is completely insane.

Fortunately, in my last job I was 100% remote, so no commute! That was the best job benefit ever, not to mention saving all that gas. And yes - climate change is an existential problem right now. Planning to get an EV, and we have ~20kW of solar to charge it 😀

I'm seriously considering an EV next year - I hear Toyota will be introducing EVs with new, better battery technology. Looking forward to it! 😀

Cost 81 cents to charge my EV after a +60 mile drive.

I know how you feel. I paid almost $2/day to drive 1200 miles over the past month.

Agree. I haven't spent a dime on fuel for almost 4 years. I have solar panels.

Do what China, and most of the rest of the world are doing, and go EV.

I bought petrol on my way to Heathrow before I went to Madrid a week ago & it was $7 per gallon & when I got back & driving home it is now $8.14 per gallon (in UK & converting litres to gallons) 😬

Yeah... I was just looking at a neat little hatchback that's selling new for $20k-ish. Five years ago, or maybe even two years ago, I would have gone for it even though it's a gas engine. But the way things are going, gas prices put it over my limit for cost of ownership. :/
