Silent Hill: Townfall launches to strong reviews, averaging 84 on OpenCritic
Developer Screen Burn's first-person horror game earns praise for atmosphere and mystery but draws mixed feedback on combat and pacing.
What to know
- Silent Hill: Townfall averaged 84 on OpenCritic with 91% critic recommendation, praising its shift to first-person perspective and mystery-driven narrative, but scoring below the Silent Hill 2 Remake.
- Critics highlighted atmospheric design and puzzle-solving as strengths while flagging excessive combat, thin characterization, and pacing issues as weaknesses.
- The game marks the series' continued comeback after the 2024 Silent Hill 2 Remake and 2025's Silent Hill f, repositioning the franchise from near-irrelevance to critical relevance.
- Fan discourse remains divided on whether the Scottish setting and departure from traditional Silent Hill geography, combined with combat-heavy design, serve or undermine the horror experience.
The dispute Whether Townfall's mechanical friction (clunky combat, recovery animations, stamina limits) is intentional design that creates horror immersion or poorly executed systems that frustrate players and undermine atmosphere. · positions read across 24 posts and comments
Townfall's intentionally clunky mechanics and combat create horror tension that critics undervalue; 84 is a strong score for horror games.

“A horror game getting an 80~90 puts it at the top of the entire genre. Alien Isolation, considered to be one of if not the best immersive horror game ever made only scored 79.”
Falcon3333 · reddit ↗
Combat design is frustratingly poorly implemented, not intentionally tense; design flaws like enemies attacking through walls undermine horror.
-
“"The combat is supposed to suck" is crazy cope. Monsters being able to attack through walls, but if you're within 5 feet of a wall your own attack hits the wall stuns you. That's not "claustrophobic tense" combat. Thats frustrating shit…”
VTS1389 · reddit ↗
The game's Scottish setting disqualifies it as a true Silent Hill title; the franchise should stay in the American town or retire.
-
“Silent Hill: But In Scotland So Shouldn't Be Called Silent Hill. Cant wait for this to bomb. Just give us the OG's and let this franchise die already.”
YoureWrongButGoOff · reddit ↗
Silent Hill fanbase is inherently negative; pre-release skepticism doesn't reflect the game's actual quality post-launch.
-
“The trick is to avoid Silent Hill fans. Nobody hates Silent Hill more than them. I would not trust the Silent Hill fanbase to tell you what is a good Silent Hill game and what isn't.”
DR1LLM4N · reddit ↗
“Silent Hill: Townfall brings the series to a new setting in a new first-person perspective. But while much has changed, the intense scares and haunting atmosphere haven't. Townfall is one of the best horror games, not just of 2026, but of this generation.”

Kotaku praises atmosphere but criticizes thin character development
Kotaku reviews the game as offering excellent atmosphere and strong setup undermined by limited character work, positioning it as a capable but flawed entry in the survival horror franchise.
“Excellent atmosphere and a strong setup are let down by thin character work in the survival horror franchise's latest spin-off…”

I mean you can clearly see it's very intentionally designed to be clunky and slow. The long recovery animations and restrictive stamina system weren't made by accident. My problem with it isn't that it's clumsy/bad, it's that there's about three times as much combat as there should be lol. It'd feel a lot less offensive if there wasn't a massive…

That statement is technically true of any silent hill game though. It's just the town name and now the franchise name. It's not like 2's story referenced the events of 1. The strongest thread SH has pulling through every game is the general vibe of the abandoned foggy town setting and the radio mechanic (and arguably the style of creature design)…

The way most of this reviews literally lie about the game or would need to be made by someone who has zero media literacy is insane. The game is extremely unremarkable in it's story, the strongest aspect is the presentation of the town which falls flat due to extremely lacking level design. Plus decitions were not made by konami, the game was…

Big toss up at this point imo but it does seem to be a more traditional style SH game compared to Silent Hill F so there's that. 1st person view adds a lot of horror potential you don't get with 3rd person too.

IGN review details first-person stealth mechanics and Scottish setting
IGN's full review describes Simon Ordell washing ashore in the fictional St. Amelia in 1990s Scotland, hunted by sound-sensitive beasts, uncovering corporate corruption and environmental disaster. The 13-hour campaign emphasizes puzzle-solving and sustained tension over action, with narrative shifts to other playable characters revealing the town's secrets.
“I spent so much of my time stalking through Silent Hill: Townfall tensed in a cautious crouchwalk, that by the end of the story I was just as worried about the damage to my character's fraying mental state as I was about the wear and tear on his knees.”

Major reviews arrive praising atmosphere and first-person innovation
IGN, Tom's Guide, Screen Rant, and Polygon post initial reviews. IGN calls it a "welcome shot in the arm" for the series; Tom's Guide names it among the generation's best horror games; Polygon acknowledges its scares but notes later pacing issues; Screen Rant praises puzzles and monsters.
“Like the intravenous needle permanently jutting out of its hero's wrist, Silent Hill: Townfall gives this long running series a welcome shot in the arm.”

Konami producer claims Townfall might outshine Silent Hill 2 Remake

True, the SH sub was filled with negativity before SH2R as well but it seems worse here with Townfall. (Weirdly SHf got a pass on pre-release negativity in there for some reason).
-
I pre-ordered just hope I won't need to replay it 50 million times to get the "true" ending. Looking at you F.

IGN says Townfall could restore mystery to survival horror
IGN opinion writer Ceridwen Millington argues that recent survival horror games have over-explained their scares through marketing, and that Townfall's approach may reclaim the genre's lost sense of genuine terror by preserving mystery.

I mean, you can count the failures on 1 hand since RE7, but you only need 2 to account for all the game that are worth mentioning since then either. So the ratio is a bit larger than negligible even if it is still the minority.
-
That’s another one I’ve been looking forward to! Graphically it looks amazing so far.

Now let's just get the Silent Hill grognards to give it a 0/10 because it doesn't take place in the American town of Silent Hill and therefore isn't a Silent Hill game 🙄
-
Silent Hill is more about atmosphere, so you don't got an excuse :-P There's usually like 1 or 2 per game just so you don't get too cozy.
-
A highly anticipated Insomniac game vs. a genre which rates very harshly. This is not an apples to apples comparison in anyway you cut it, a horror game getting an 80~90 puts it at the top of the entire genre. Alien Isolation, considered to be one of if not the best immersive horror game ever made only scored 79.
-
yeah, eating good with 2 releases a YEAR. great games, just wish there were more horror releases in general. Cronos was good, and RE9, and this looks promising. but 3 games in 2026? that's not eating good necessarily.
-
Wilds and DD2 have also been rectifying their greatest issues and are coming out with two really good looking expansions soon. Just a lot of cool stuff all around from them

I love horror so much, I love the aesthetic, the creativity, the vibe, but as Fanny Bigelow III, I can't handle jumpscares, so it's a no no 🙁

All I wanna know is how's the music coz music is what makes me revisit SH again and again. SH1/2/3/4 won't be the same without one of the best music in gaming.
-
For real and I do not know why. People are so negative nowadays, it has to be their opinion otherwise it's wrong, even though they do not even know how the game is going to be, because it ain't even out yet
-
The problem with Wolverine isn’t the scoring is the extremely linearity, predictable gameplay and handholding.

I mean judging from Silent Hill 2 and F’s reception I’d imagine people are excited for this.
