Commenter provides Google Maps location for the diner

A user says the building still exists, pinpointing it near Halloran Springs Road and I-15 rather than Victorville proper, and notes it looks much worse now.

“That building is still there but it is near Halloran Springs Road & I-15. Not very pretty anymore... Here it is on Google maps.”

Local residents dispute the stated location

A former Victorville resident says the building isn't actually in Victorville, and another commenter identifies it as still standing near Halloran Springs Road and I-15.

“Lived in Victorville. This might be somewhere else but it’s not in Victorville.”

    • Route 66. That would have been the last stop before going over cajon pass into San Bernardino. I'm guessing in Grapes of Wrath they turn north at Barstow to go up to San Joaquin valley. But most depression era trips would have gone through Victorville.

Some commenters draw political and economic parallels

A few replies use the image as a metaphor for the future of small businesses under current economic and political conditions, or for the effects of data centers on regional water use.

“That's every small business in America in the next two years if we don't get Orange Nero and his band of merry tech lords out of the WH.”

Commenter links decay to George Air Force Base closure

A commenter explains Victorville's decline followed the closure of George Air Force Base, once the town's main economic source, which had trained pilots headed to Vietnam.

“since they closed the base , Victorville declined.”

    • Remembering an old Far Side cartoon with two guys standing outside a diner with the word “EAT” in big letters. In the distance a huge monster is crawling over the mountains, headed their way. One man looks at the other and say “I hope it can’t read.”
