  • Users cite specific comparisons from 2021 onwards showing dramatic price increases in just 3–5 years, not decades.
  • The conversation reflects broader inflation anxiety, with commenters describing sticker shock across food service and noting the shift happened rapidly rather than gradually.
  • Reported food quality decline compounds the pricing grievance; customers describe smaller portions and lower quality alongside higher prices.

McDonald's pricing is now unreasonable compared to sit-down restaurants, making it no longer viable as a cheap option.

  • “We can buy a big burrito at a nicer place and split it for what we would pay for 2 McDonalds meals.”

McDonald's quality has deteriorated alongside price increases, making it poor value on both fronts.

  • “I needed a microscope for the tiny, but full priced, chicken sandwich. And don't get me started on the fries- greasy and limp. Fries used to be the star attraction at mcDs. What happened? Shit food at sit-down prices”

This price shock reflects broader rapid inflation, particularly the jarring increases of the past 2–3 years.

  • “You suffer from early onset ''old person syndrome', brought on by this rapid inflation. I have it too...I suspect its epidemic. Remembering how much less stuff used to cost is literally stunning.”

Prices across all food service, including sit-down restaurants, have become prohibitively expensive.

  • “Yeah sounds like you haven't seen the prices in restaurants for a while”

Conversation broadens to inflation anxiety and rapid recent price increases

Commenters began contextualizing the McDonald's experience as part of wider economic shock, with one user attributing the frustration to "early onset old person syndrome" caused by rapid inflation, while another distinguished between long-term historical price changes and the jarring jumps from just three years ago.

“It's one thing when you're comparing the price stuff was 30 years ago and quite another when you're measuring the jump from *three* years ago.”

    • That doesn’t matter. You’re right. You might as well go to a proper restaurant now that McDonald’s food costs as much as it does.

Users report specific price comparisons triggering permanent dining shifts

Commenters shared concrete examples: one user noted paying $29 for two people at McDonald's in 2021, then discovering a Longhorn steakhouse meal for two cost only $34, after which they stopped visiting McDonald's entirely.

“Back in 2021ish, when I'd take my son out for lunch every Saturday, at one point we got McDonald's and it ran $29 for two people. The next weekend we went to Longhorn and it was $34. We haven't done McDonald's since.”

    • I can relate. Took grandkids and what it cost me I could have gone to the cafe and brought home half of it for later. McD’s is a rip off currently. Doubtful prices will ever drop after this fiasco.

Commenters validate pricing concerns and compare to sit-down dining

Multiple Bluesky users quickly responded with their own experiences, citing specific price comparisons where a proper restaurant meal cost less than McDonald's, and noting declining food quality alongside the price increases.

    • There are places that allow you to sit down. Then a person comes and asks what you would like to eat, and brings it to you. There are real metal cutlery and glasses made of glass. Many of these places are family-owned. And the food is mostly affordable and delicious. You should try one out.

A UK-based content creator posted about visiting McDonald's for lunch and being shocked by the prices, noting that the chain has transformed from an affordable guilty treat to a venue where "I might as well go to a proper restaurant."

That said, I made my annual visit to McDonald's yesterday because I really needed a greasy burger and fries during my volunteering lunch break. HOW MUCH! Somehow McDs has translated from an affordable guilty treat into fuck me, I might as well go to a proper restaurant.
