Baselayer raises $35M to verify AI agents for financial institutions
The identity verification startup expands from business verification to building trust infrastructure for autonomous agents.
What to know
- Baselayer, already used by 2,300+ financial institutions for business verification, is expanding into AI agent authentication as autonomous agents increasingly conduct financial transactions on behalf of businesses.
- The $35M Series A funds development of "Know Your Agent" technology to verify whether AI agents are legitimate or fraudulent—addressing a gap in fraud infrastructure designed only for humans and companies.
- McKinsey estimates agentic commerce could redirect $3–5 trillion of global retail spending by 2030, making trustworthy agent verification critical infrastructure as adoption accelerates.
- Stripe reports 70% of API requests developers once made manually are now issued by agents; Shopify, Visa, Mastercard and American Express have all shipped agent commerce protocols in the past year.
“We already help one in five U.S. financial institutions answer, 'Can I trust this business?' Now we're building the infrastructure they need to answer, 'Can I trust this agent, who does it represent, and what is it allowed to do?'”
