Melissa Combs on the age confusion of being in your 50s
A Bluesky post about feeling multiple ages at once resonates widely with middle-aged and older adults.
What to know
- A Bluesky post about feeling multiple ages simultaneously—young at concerts, old after 9 PM, energized by '80s music—struck a chord across age groups from 50s to 70s and beyond.
- Commenters consistently reported the same dissonance: mental youth and energy clashing with physical limitations and recovery times.
- The thread reflects a broader observation that aging is not linear; people experience multiple versions of themselves depending on context and activity.
The experience intensifies and extends through the 60s, 70s, and beyond—it's not unique to your 50s.

“Good news — I'm here to tell you that all of this extends well into your 60s!”

Music and dancing—especially '80s and classic rock—keep the spirit young even as the body ages, and attending concerts remains possible and worth the recovery time.
-
“I was in a small specialty market with my nephew a few weeks ago and they started playing 80s music and I was dancing in the aisles…I couldn't stop.”

The physical cost of aging is real: recovery from social activities takes longer, fatigue sets in early, and mobility becomes an issue—but the mindset of youth persists.

Commenters share parallel experiences across decades of life
Within hours, hundreds of people across age groups—50s through 70s and beyond—responded with their own versions of this experience, describing the disconnect between physical capability, mental state, and social energy at different times and contexts.
“57 yrs and living the age range from 17 yrs to 115 yrs.”

I’ll tell you……being in my 20s in the ‘70s was more fun than being in my 70s in the ‘20s 😀

It starts in your late 40s when you begin getting junk mail from AARP. You indignantly toss it. Late 50s, you peek at it just in case. Mid 60s, assisted living flyers. Early 70s, you peek at it. Mid to late 70s, Neptune Society. So it goes.

Melissa Combs posts about the contradictions of being in your 50s
Combs posted a humor-focused reflection on Bluesky describing the dissonance of middle age: feeling 24 at concerts, 88 after 8/9 PM, 115 when getting up off the floor, and 17 when '80s music plays, while being 55 on paper.
“Being in your 50s is confusing. On paper, I'm 55. At a concert, I'm 24. After 8/9 PM, I'm 88. Getting up off the floor makes me 115. But when the'80s music starts playing, I'm 17 all over again.”

Just pick a happy average. I turned 36 a mere 46 years ago and just stayed there.
-
Believe me, this is even more true at the age of 69!

You called it perfectly, Melissa. I was in a small specialty market with my nephew a few weeks ago and they started playing 80s music and I was dancing in the aisles and my nephew Greg, who was born in the 80s was just shaking his head at me, but I couldn’t stop.

youtu.be/OBqMegt1jdA?... My answer to everything. Now I'm in my 50s. I'll forever be young while I'm dancing .

I'm 70 and I am still at "that awkward stage" of life & my body runs social commentary that I have not given it permission to use.
-
I can sooo relate to that...I'm 75...love music, love dancing, love going to concerts...but...catch me in the morning and shyte...but my maxim...I WILL NEVER LOSE THE CHILD WITHIN!

At least I no longer receive AARP recruiting mailings now that I’m in my late 70s.

Good news — I’m here to tell you that all of this extends well into your 60s! 😎🤘🏼✌🏻

No one warns you that you never really outgrow and leave your young self behind. The ages are are deftly folded in together as you age.

There may not ever be a post I identify with more!

I’m 64. At a wedding on Saturday I was 22. Sunday morning I was 94. If I’m on the floor I’m 6 months because someone needs to pick me up.
-
Can relate. Mid 70’s and still going to concerts. ☝️ Will never grow up 😉

I feel you. I’m 63. It gets more confusing!

Retired, grew my hair long. Now it’s turning gray. Pretty soon I’ll be more Santa than Satan.

At 70, with 2 decades of running & gunning in my distant past, I just feel fortunate to be alive. A 2 set show is exhausting. Physically, my body is not so good, but I'm like Peter Pan, I'll never grow up.😂 Take good care of yourself every way possible. ❤️

I just turned 59, and next Tuesday, I’m seeing Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Anthrax in SA. I’ve already taken the following day off!

Omg im hitting 50 next yr and this has started since I was 45 lol

Hey, parts of me are 70+, but other parts, such as my right foot, are still a teenager… (With an EV, that doesn’t hit mileage as much as it does tire wear!)

No lie there 8pm and I’m fading fast lol.
