Putin agrees to resume US-Ukraine-Russia talks after floating Trump-Xi summit
Days after proposing a Trump-Xi meeting that would exclude Kyiv, Putin tells envoy Witkoff he'll restart three-way talks with Washington and Ukraine next month.

- U.S. backs plan to restore Russian gas flows to Europe through Ukraine

What to know
- Putin first floated a Trump-Xi-Putin summit at APEC Shenzhen in November to negotiate an end to the war on terms favoring Moscow, with Zelensky excluded, drawing sharp Ukrainian objections.
- Trump says he has not agreed to that trilateral format and suggested a Putin-Xi-Trump meeting would instead focus on nuclear disarmament.
- Separately, the Kremlin says Putin has agreed in principle to resume three-way US-Ukraine-Russia negotiations next month after meeting US envoy Steve Witkoff, though Putin is not yet "fully satisfied" with proposals.
- Zelensky has backed resuming those talks and is pushing for a direct presidential-level meeting with Putin; final dates are not yet set.

A US-Russia-China summit that excludes Ukraine resembles a modern Yalta or Molotov-Ribbentrop-style carve-up of the world between great powers.

Zelenskyy has been saying the same for two years - ceasefire along LOC, trilateral talks. There is nothing new about this, just bad actors trying to twist the narrative as if he is acquiescing. But putin always rejects ceasefire unless Ukraine gives up Donbass at minimum, and trilateral talks have been going nowhere.

Ukraine's Sybiha condemns the proposed US-Russia-China summit
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha says a trilateral US-Russia-China meeting without Kyiv would only encourage Putin to continue the war, while a Ukraine-US-Russia format could help end it sooner.
“A trilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia, China, and the U.S. would do only the opposite: encourage Putin to continue this war.”
