What to know

  • Putin first floated a Trump-Xi-Putin summit at APEC Shenzhen in November to negotiate an end to the war on terms favoring Moscow, with Zelensky excluded, drawing sharp Ukrainian objections.
  • Trump says he has not agreed to that trilateral format and suggested a Putin-Xi-Trump meeting would instead focus on nuclear disarmament.
  • Separately, the Kremlin says Putin has agreed in principle to resume three-way US-Ukraine-Russia negotiations next month after meeting US envoy Steve Witkoff, though Putin is not yet "fully satisfied" with proposals.
  • Zelensky has backed resuming those talks and is pushing for a direct presidential-level meeting with Putin; final dates are not yet set.

A US-Russia-China summit that excludes Ukraine resembles a modern Yalta or Molotov-Ribbentrop-style carve-up of the world between great powers.

  • “It could be dubbed as "Molotov-Ribbentropism" as per pact what in Russia they are remembering fondly and visioning it as an example how world order should be created.”

Putin's proposal is a desperate, likely hollow move timed to US midterms, unlikely to succeed given continued European backing for Ukraine.

  • “I see this as a last ditch effort before midterm elections, because if democrats manage to win those, the US internal politics will turn into a complete shitshow.”

some voices

Mainstream media is underplaying Trump's dismissive response that downplays the need for a ceasefire.

  • “I cannot believe Trump's "this is fine" comment wasn't at the top of every news site yesterday or even in the headlines of the ones that did cover it.”

Zelensky backs talks resumption, presses for Putin meeting

Zelensky says Ukraine supports the US push to resume trilateral talks as soon as possible, calling it important to prepare the ground for a future presidential-level summit with Putin.

“The agenda is clear: to end the war, bring peace closer, and prepare everything for a meeting at the level of leaders,…”
    — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

    • Zelenskyy has been saying the same for two years - ceasefire along LOC, trilateral talks. There is nothing new about this, just bad actors trying to twist the narrative as if he is acquiescing. But putin always rejects ceasefire unless Ukraine gives up Donbass at minimum, and trilateral talks have been going nowhere.

Ukraine's Sybiha condemns the proposed US-Russia-China summit

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha says a trilateral US-Russia-China meeting without Kyiv would only encourage Putin to continue the war, while a Ukraine-US-Russia format could help end it sooner.

“A trilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia, China, and the U.S. would do only the opposite: encourage Putin to continue this war.”
