Spain train crash toll hits 69; minister blames controller, refuses to quit

Riot police clashed with protesters in Madrid demanding accountability after a high-speed rail collision near Toledo killed 69 people.

What to know

  • 69 confirmed dead after a Renfe high-speed train rammed a stationary Iryo train near Toledo on October 28 — Spain's deadliest rail crash since 2013.
  • Leaked controller-to-driver recordings show the Renfe train was cleared to resume normal speed while the Iryo train ahead was still stalled on the backup LZB system.
  • Transport Minister Óscar Puente blames a controller's error and refuses to resign, even though it is the second deadly crash this year involving the same rail companies.
  • Protests turned violent in Madrid on October 30, with riot police using tear gas and rubber bullets against demonstrators demanding accountability.

The dispute Whether the crash reflects one controller's split-second error or years of deferred maintenance and an overdue signalling upgrade is contested, alongside an unverified social-media claim tying the crash to Israel-Spain tensions. · positions read across 157 posts and comments

The crash is the result of years of deferred maintenance and underinvestment in Spain's aging rail signalling infrastructure.

  • “There are a lot of railway tracks that are not in good state so speed must be lowered. There sre incideents and delays routinely, all the time.”

Blame should fall on the whole safety system, not just the controller — a 'Swiss cheese' chain of failures, not one person's negligence.

  • “You have to look at it through a Swiss Cheese model: every individual safety layer can and will have holes, but a disaster can only occur when all of those holes align.”

some voices

The crash resulted from an Israeli/Netanyahu threat against Spain over its pro-Palestinian stance.

  • “Netanyahu threatened Spain, which had sided with the Palestinians. He said, «There could be sudden power outages and train accidents».”

    • Ok, they could not restart the system, that should not lead to a crash. There are two layers here, the system should not be going down 170 times in a year and iryo should have a better procedure to restart the train (which should only happen rarely if the LZB was maintained properly or already replaced). The question is, how is it possible that in…

Transport minister blames controller, refuses to resign
