Reddit to wall off content behind mandatory logins as search traffic collapses

CEO Steve Huffman ties the shift to a steep drop in Google search referrals and AI scraping, with tests starting outside the US in Q4.

What to know

  • Reddit is moving away from allowing logged-out access, testing the requirement first in non-US markets starting Q4 2026 before deciding on a global policy.
  • CEO Steve Huffman links the move to a drop of more than 1 million weekly search referrals in October, attributed to AI search tools like Google's AI Overviews and scraping.
  • Huffman warns that if the decline continues, Q4 daily active unique users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage, even though logged-in/app users already generate over 80% of monetization.
  • Online reaction is largely negative, with users and commentators calling it the end of open, anonymous Reddit access and doubting it will meaningfully stop scraping.

The dispute Whether the login wall genuinely protects users and curbs AI scraping, or is primarily a move to boost ad targeting and data-licensing revenue under that banner. · positions read across 119 posts and comments

This is further 'enshittification' that effectively kills Reddit's value as an open, anonymous resource.

The plan will practically backfire by cutting off link-sharing, search visibility, and casual human visitors.

A login wall is a defensible security/anti-scraping measure given rampant data misuse elsewhere.

  • “That's probably best practice security-wise. Between all the linked accounts, constant data tracking, and inevitable data breaches, it might be less tinfoil hat and more responsible these days to partition your accounts and data.”

I tend to agree that all the AI scraping from outside is problematic, but if you force a log in you will heavily cut into the exposure to actual human users that want to learn about real user experiences. Huffman's shareholder letter details the traffic collapse and rollout plan

In the Q3 shareholder letter, Huffman said search and logged-out/web traffic were hit hardest, warned that continued decline could cut Q4 DAUq by a low-double-digit percentage, and said Reddit will test the login requirement in select non-US markets starting in Q4 before deciding on a global rollout.

“During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week.”

    • Quite frankly, I think they're doing it to profit from selling the data, shutting out any AI software not sanctioned by Reddit in the process. Local LLMs won't have a good means of browsing Reddit. Cloud AI services may be more expensive if their providers have to pay to maintain access to Reddit. It's bad all around.

Reddit announces it will become a 'logged-in-only experience'

Alongside its Q3 2026 earnings release, Reddit said it is shifting away from allowing logged-out browsing, a change CEO Steve Huffman confirmed would end two decades of open access to most of the site.

“Moving to primarily logged-in will ensure our users have the best Reddit experience possible, and can find the content and communities most relevant to them.”

  • Will the login requirement meaningfully stop unauthorized AI scraping, or just push more of Reddit's data into paid licensing deals?
