Trump administration suspends South Africa and Rwanda from US trade program
Both nations lose duty-free access under AGOA effective January 2027, affecting $1.7bn in South African exports.
What to know
- South Africa and Rwanda lose duty-free access under AGOA starting January 1, 2027, with South Africa's $1.7bn in annual AGOA exports most at risk.
- Trump administration cited trade barriers, rule of law, and human rights for Rwanda; for South Africa, it added Trump's claim of persecution of white people and South Africa's ICJ genocide case against Israel.
- South Africa downplayed impact, noting AGOA exports represent only 10% of US exports and 1% of global exports, and is already pursuing alternative trade partners including China.
“Exports under AGOA make up only about 10 percent of the country's total exports to the US and 1 percent of its total global exports.”

We're pushing for closer relationships with India and Brazil, too. Just the other day, they were doing joint military exercises here in Cape Town. I don't imagine the US will like us being friendly with a Brazilian government that has outright rebuked them this year.

The US plans to remove South Africa and Rwanda from its African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a duty-free trade initiative. This move follows concerns over economic policies and trade practices. The decision could impact trade relations and economic benefits for both countries. https:// p.dw.com/p/5OybM # TradePolicy # USAfricaRelations # AGOA

Your government just made exceptions for the white ones. The rest of us browns (85+% of the country) are as undesirable as any other set of Africans to the Republicans.
