NASA's Swift telescope plunges to Earth after failed robotic rescue
After 22 years hunting gamma-ray bursts, the aging observatory is reentering the atmosphere this week once a last-ditch repair mission failed to save it.
What to know
- Swift Observatory, launched in 2004, logged over 2,000 gamma-ray bursts and 1,400 exploding stars before orbital decay forced it offline in late October 2026.
- A commercial rescue attempt by Katalyst Space's robot Link failed in September 2026 after it could not get closer than 7-9 miles to the telescope.
- The U.S. Space Force projects uncontrolled reentry around November 4, 2026, with a debris risk zone spanning parts of Africa, Australia, India, Southeast Asia, and Central/South America.
- Most of the 1.5-ton spacecraft is expected to burn up, though dense tungsten and mirror components could survive and likely fall into the ocean.

Swift's reentry narrows to Wednesday, AEDT
ABC Australia reports the minibus-sized, solar-winged Swift telescope is predicted to reenter the atmosphere on November 4 (AEDT), with its exact landing site and what will survive still unknown.
“NASA's Swift space telescope, about the size of a minibus with solar-panel wings, is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere sometime on Nov 4 (AEDT). Where it will land, and what will survive its fiery re-entry remain unknown.”

The Swift space telescope is predicted to re-enter the atmosphere on November 4, UTC 09:57 ± 6h. It's been in orbit for 22 years. But it's already dead, as NASA stopped operations on October 23rd. 🧪 🔭 #SpaceJunk

Astronomer here! Worth also noting that Swift was THE most cited space telescope mission ever, far surpassing Hubble. In addition to GRBs it turns out it's just really useful to have a telescope in space you can point super quickly whenever something interesting is going on. RIP, she will be missed- we are definitely feeling the loss already :(

NASA detail's Swift's risk and likely debris fate
Coverage notes NASA has calculated the risk of harm to people from falling debris, with most of the telescope expected to burn up and any surviving dense tungsten or mirror fragments likely to land in the ocean.

Space Force projects reentry around November 4
The U.S. Space Force forecasts the 1.5-ton Swift spacecraft will reenter on or around Friday, with a reentry zone covering parts of Africa, Australia, India, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America; one estimate puts public risk at 1-in-2,100.
