Apple adds automatic Adaptive Dark Mode to Safari in iOS/macOS 27.3 beta
A new WebKit engine feature darkens light websites on the fly, alongside Vertical Tabs and Siri tab controls in Safari's first 27.3 beta.
What to know
- Adaptive Dark Mode automatically darkens light websites that lack a native dark theme, using a color matrix that inverts luminosity while preserving hue and aims for WCAG 4.5:1 text contrast.
- Sites that declare dark-mode support via the color-scheme CSS property or meta tag are left untouched, and developers can add a tag to opt out entirely.
- The feature ships alongside Vertical Tabs and new Siri AI controls for tabs, Tab Groups, and browsing history in the first iOS/iPadOS/macOS 27.3 beta.
- Public release is expected in December after further beta testing; HN discussion is split between enthusiasm for the fix and skepticism about automated rendering versus existing tools like Dark Reader and Noir.
The dispute Whether an engine-level automatic dark mode will reliably produce good results across the messy real web, versus simply shifting the burden of failure cases from developers who skip dark mode onto Apple's heuristics. · positions read across 56 posts and comments
This closes a real gap and is a welcome, low-effort win for users who browse in dark mode.

Automated color inversion is risky and will likely create new friction for developers when it fails on edge cases.

“If this ends up working anything like the Gmail Dark Mode implementations on iOS and Android that have drove developers insane and users mad, then I expect both parties to become upset.”
vinnymac · Hacker News ↗
Third-party tools like Dark Reader, Noir and Stylus already do this well, so a native version is redundant for many.
-
“Everyone should checkout Dark Reader extension, it's been doing adaptive dark mode for many years, and it's customisable.”
greazy · Hacker News ↗
Not everyone wants dark mode; some users with astigmatism or other needs prefer light text on dark to be converted the other way, or dislike dark mode culture generally.
-
“I want the opposite. I suffer from astigmatism, which makes white on black hard to read. I wish Safari could turn dark mode websites into light mode websites.”

Hacker News debates the feature's design and alternatives
A large Hacker News thread formed around the WebKit announcement, with commenters split between welcoming native automatic dark mode, worrying it will create friction for developers, pointing to existing extensions like Dark Reader and Noir, and critiquing technical choices such as the light-dark() CSS naming and WCAG contrast math.
“If this ends up working anything like the Gmail Dark Mode implementations on iOS and Android that have drove developers insane and users mad, then I expect both parties to become upset.”

Does this work for light mode, too? I suspect I'm in the minority given this is a tech circle, but I greatly prefer light mode because dark mode has always been harder for me to read for whatever reason. When I go to dark mode sites I click Reader View when possible to make it easier to read. It'd be cool if there was an "adaptive light mode" that…

It makes me so angry that they named the CSS function `light-dark` instead of leaving the door open to allowing generic user- or site-specified color schemes. I mean it was right there in all the other mechanisms around this feature, they just had to read and think about why these are structured the way they are, and why "light" and "dark" were…

Ever lay in bed at night reading in dark mode and load a bright web page that burns your blood vessel pattern onto the back of your eyeballs? Yeah, only about 1 in 4 websites support dark mode. That leaves a lot of the web in supernova mode. Safari 27.3 beta has a neat ability to automatically adapt light webpage content into dark when you're…

WebKit team publishes technical details on Adaptive Dark Mode
A WebKit blog post by the Safari engineering team explained how the feature analyzes page color histograms, builds a luminosity-inverting color matrix, and transforms SVGs, gradients, and simple bitmap logos while leaving canvases and dark-declared sites untouched.
“Almost 40% of web page loads are from users in dark mode, and yet only 10% of page loads support it.”

> Now thanks to web inspector I remove monospace from stylesheets. There could be a bookmarklet to do this probably. You should look into writing user styles (and/or scripts) and using something like [Stylus](https://add0n.com/stylus.html) or [Violentmonkey](https://violentmonkey.github.io/) to apply them.

Same, depending on the lighting conditions of the room, I may use dark mode, but most of the time I am on light mode because it just feels better to read.

I appreciate the privacy aspect. I use LibreWolf—which for this discussion means Fx with `privacy.resistFingerprinting` on—& I always end up on the default light theme purely to avoid all the fingerprinting. It’s always kinda irked me that I couldn’t opt out based on a list or heuristic… it’s really the corpo, ad-riddled, proprietary-tracking…

The problem with IE was that it was the dominant browser, every website HAD to work on it or the client would throw a fit. Chrome (Chromium) is the new IE. It's the market leader and all sites must work on it.

> It'd be cool if there was an "adaptive light mode" that kept the page structure the same but inverted the colors when the original is dark. 100% agree. In addition it sounds like they're doing more than just that, and actually adjusting contrast towards best practices as necessary, too... which is actually the _bigger_ problem I have with dark…

Dark mode only and monospaced body text are the two things I hate most about “techy” sites.

> In the spring of 2019, Safari 12.1 became the first browser to support dark mode on the web. It’s often said that Safari is today’s Internet Explorer, lacking behind on standards. I’d argue, Apple is on the forefront regarding standards in the interest of users, while taking their time with standards benefiting ~~Google~~ web developers.

No thanks. When you are my age you will understand.I have no idea why all the fucking vibed websites that swank around the web these days are unable to do a simple thing: * Have one or more "themes" with dark and light variants * Query the browser for a preference of light or dark and offer the default theme with the probed variant. There is also…

This is awesome because I like reasonable solutions that let me be lazy.I'm sure there are designers that love dealing with two themes, and will do beautiful work within each theme. But I'm really fine with letting the computer figure it out. CRM, back office tools, admin dashboards... many clients are approving one design and dark mode is an…

As a user, I'm really excited about this. There are still so many websites that don't support dark mode.Having built websites myself, I know how much attention it takes to make sure every page and component looks good in both light and dark mode. It's not perfect yet. Even in the second demo, you can see that the chart remains white, creating a…

> When transforming text color, Adaptive Dark Mode aims for sufficient contrast as defined by the WCAG 4.5:1 contrast ratio. The WCAG 2 contrast checker is known to be inaccurate, specifically for light on dark color combinations (i.e. dark mode) so 4.5:1 isn't always going to be easy to read. The APCA contrast checker was being considered for WCAG…

Personally I'm excited for this on iOS—I find that reading boring stuff in dark mode at minimum brightness on my phone is easily the most effective way for me to fall asleep (contrary to the blue light/no phones in bed advice). With an OLED screen the amount of light emitted is so much lower than any alternative I've tried. For sites like HN (some…

I use dark mode for everything, so I'm pretty happy about this. Some sites were clearly designed to be light, and forcing dark on them could break the experience, but that's exactly what `color-scheme: light only` is for, and it's good that Safari respects it. Other than that it feels like a win-win to me: great for dark mode users, and for devs…
