Argentine biologist Ferrer develops injectable gel for heart tissue repair
25-year-old Pilar Ferrer's early-stage cardiac research sparks online debate over stage of development and media framing.
What to know
- The viral post claimed Ferrer 'developed' an injectable gel for heart repair, but commenters clarified the work is preclinical with human trials not yet underway (planned for 2028).
- No peer-reviewed publication has been announced; multiple commenters questioned the lack of academic rigor in the announcement.
- Similar injectable gel technology was developed at UC San Diego in 2012, suggesting the novelty claim is overstated.
- The thread shifted from scientific critique to broader debate about international science funding, representation, and the US's competitive disadvantage in attracting talent.

Discussion shifts to broader themes of scientific talent and borders
As corrections spread, commenters pivoted to discuss international science funding, representation of women in STEM, and concerns about brain drain from the US. Some framed Ferrer's work as evidence that other countries are investing in science; others questioned why the US does not attract similar talent.
“Sowas passiert übrigens, wenn man begabte, talentierte Menschen fördert, anstatt eine klassistische, rassistische, misogyne Gesellschaft zu kultivieren, in welcher Menschen kraft Herkunft & Geschlecht von Entwicklungschancen ausgenommen werden.”

Is it fair someone so beautiful is also so smart? They don't say that about me that often, actually either of those things... but my wife allowed me to say this⬆️

Wow! There's been a lot of outstanding breakthroughs lately. Mainly by women.

Fact-checkers clarify preclinical status and lack of peer review
Multiple commenters corrected the framing: the research is early-stage and preclinical, no peer-reviewed paper has been published, and human clinical trials had not begun as of the article's publication (planned for 2028). One commenter noted no public indication of peer-reviewed submission exists.

Commenters question methodology and claim attribution
Within minutes, commenters began raising concerns about peer review, the stage of development, and whether Ferrer alone deserves credit. One commenter noted a similar injectable gel was developed at UC San Diego in 2012, suggesting the claim overstates novelty.

Most of these breakthroughs appear in the news when they're literally at the very first stages of working in labs or animal research. She did this with a cow heart, it's a long ways out from being tested in humans and even longer from being approved for general use

At 25 I was that accomplished. I was also frequently high. Which I consider an accomplishment.

THIS IS FANATIC DISCOVERY BY A FEMALE 25 YEARS OLD ARGENTINIAN BOLOGIST PILAR FERRER! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

You probably mean well but this is a sexist remark. Remarks about the attractiveness of female scientists belong in the past. Just don't.

Hmmm, a 2012 article regarding "Injectable Gel Could Repair Tissue Damaged by Heart Attack" developed at UC San Diego. This injectable gel was developed almost 15 years ago! today.

A genius woman who contributes to the world. I think I love her! 😍

She's a cow heart scientist. This is click bait. It's nowhere near human heart science.
