OpenAI floods Instagram and TikTok with paid influencer content for ChatGPT
Sponsored posts pitching ChatGPT as 'cool' and 'good for the world' nearly quadrupled from June to August, a Business Insider investigation finds.
What to know
- Sponsored Instagram posts promoting ChatGPT rose from 61 in June to 122 in July to 141 in August 2026, per HypeAuditor data cited by Business Insider.
- OpenAI is targeting parenting, fitness and entrepreneurial creators, not just tech influencers, to broaden ChatGPT's consumer base and grow enterprise sales.
- Some creators who worked with OpenAI, including on an August brand trip, faced audience backlash calling the sponsored content 'morally bankrupt' and 'dystopian'.
- Competing AI firms Anthropic and Higgsfield AI are also courting influencers, described by one creator as a 'big war' for market share.

ChatGPT, like other products, can be harmful to many while benefiting a few — that doesn't stop it from selling.

Hacker News discussion criticizes OpenAI's ad tactics as manipulative
The story hit Hacker News' front page, drawing comments accusing OpenAI of using influencer marketing to launder its image and questioning the ethics and language ('prompting' influencers) of the campaign.
“So either influencers are automatons like LLMs who just do as their current-highest-bidder says based on a prompt (!), or in fact perhaps we skipped that bit and they're all LLMs, for convenience.”

I just think we should quit trying to make non bankrupt openai happen. Its just not going to happen. We in the red states of America need to start lobbying our reps and senators to deal with this mess. I think the FBI should seriously consider doing a raid on a few openai datacenters, obviously you want ICE to be the physical presence with the…

I don't even know if they need an influencer army. I am seeing people out on the streets deferring to ChatGPT for even basic things in a way that Google never achieved.I was at a hotel bar the other night and some guy kept bothering the bartender about what was on TV. Every time the bartender told him what they could do he went off for a few…

Scam Altman and the company culture he shaped - that’s what you get when you put a shady marketing hype-guy in a position where an actual scientist (or at least benevolent human) is urgently needed. No wonder he relies on hype and manipulating social media mainly, as all actual scientists have left openAI years ago when they found out who Altman…

- Why does OpenAI need human influencers if its own models can generate similarly persuasive content?
- How is the reported doubling of sponsored posts actually measured, given it reportedly only counts posts using OpenAI's partner hashtags?

It continued to blow my mind that the influencer industry is a thing that works.I'm not questioning it. I know it does. I just cannot wrap my head around it beyond the initial marketing angle (you cannot be interested in an article unless you know it exists).Eg I like to watch some pretty mainstream creators like mkbhd. Never was I actually…

All it will do is identify which influencers to ignore/block/blacklist at all costs.

I think the word you're looking for is propaganda. They're deliberately using propaganda to make you think happy thoughts.

There are lots of products we know are bad for the world that still sell plenty well. Petroleum products (to include plastic), cigarettes, alcohol, guns, etc.People generally understand that all of the above are not clear absolute negatives. There are some positives to each. And to LLMs.

Have you seen the Japanese ads for chatgpt? The rapping is awful I don’t know if that’s because of Japanese rappers, AI lyrics or just the music itself it’s just so forced
