Kremlin dangles Zelensky-Putin phone call, Kyiv insists on in-person meeting
Russia floats a phone call and renews demands that Zelensky travel to Moscow, while Kyiv calls it a tactic to dodge a face-to-face summit.
What to know
- Kremlin officials are signaling openness to a Putin-Zelensky phone call while simultaneously repeating the long-standing demand that Zelensky travel to Moscow for any in-person meeting.
- Ukrainian officials suspect the phone-call offer is a tactic to avoid a face-to-face summit, which Kyiv argues is the only forum where territorial and security-guarantee issues can actually be resolved.
- The dispute unfolds as trilateral US-Russia-Ukraine talks are set for Abu Dhabi, with a possible Trump-brokered leaders' meeting floated for the December G20 summit in Miami.
- Putin and Zelensky have not met in person since 2019; Zelensky's 2025 Istanbul invitation was declined by Putin, who sent a lower-level delegation instead.
The dispute Commenters disagree over whether security fears about a phone call tracing Zelensky's location are a legitimate concern or an implausible overreaction. · positions read across 13 posts and comments
A phone call poses a real security risk because Russia could use it to trace or target Zelensky.

Trump will save his Owner, mob money supplier, and Master Putin however he can. Both will try to assassinate Zelensky. The contracts have already gone out. That's why he stopped intelligence exchange with Ukraine, and had Elmo turn off starshield.

Couldn't he take the call from, say, the UK? After all, the UK is a Ukraine suppoerter, literally a continent apart and also - as far as the war is concerned - neutral ground. Also doubt Russia would actually strike on UK soil.

- Why would Russia need a phone call to locate Zelensky when he already travels and appears publicly?
- Could the call simply be held from a neutral country like the UK to sidestep security concerns?

Holy crap. You, and the posters here that upvoted this post, are delusional if you think that the Russians would require a phone call geo-locate Zelensky for an assassination.

Why are so many people asking if this will lead to Zelsnsky getting assassinated? Thats not going to suddenly collapse ukrainian resistance

Putin only wants a call to redeem himself and I guess spin Ukraine being unreasonable. Worse case they try to take out Zelensky. Solution to that host the call in Europe. Hope Putin not desperate doesn't do something stupid.

It doesn't matter if it undermines his credibility with the Kremlin, the question is what Ukrainians and EUropeans think. Transparency could be a positive there.

This would be a breach of diplomatic etiquette beyond the pale It would backfire

I don't blame him. What's to say Russia doesn't trace the call and try to take him out?
