Itch.io deletes terabytes of AI-generated content
The indie game platform removed AI slop but stopped short of a blanket ban, drawing calls for stricter policies.
What to know
- Itch.io removed several terabytes of AI-generated content but clarified it is not implementing a blanket ban on AI content.
- Community response is divided: some praised the cleanup while others argue it's insufficient without stronger policies to prevent future spam.
- Users are calling for either a complete AI content ban or a default filter option to hide AI-generated games, similar to adult content controls.
- The scale of the deletion (multiple terabytes) has prompted questions about how such volume was allowed to accumulate and what systems will prevent recurrence.
The dispute Whether Itch.io should implement a complete ban on AI-generated content or merely add filtering and enforcement mechanisms to control spam. · positions read across 133 posts and comments
The deletion is good but incomplete; itch.io needs a full ban on AI-generated content.

At minimum, implement a default filter for AI content rather than banning it outright.
-
“if you're not willing to ban it, you need a add a setting to filter it out that's on by default the way you have a setting for adult content”

This is a good step but the platform needs sustained vigilance to prevent recurrence.

“Well done! And now you have to be vigilant forever because these people are relentless”

Users demand filtering and policy enforcement mechanisms
Commenters emphasized the need for either a complete ban or at minimum a default filter to hide AI-generated content, similar to how adult content is handled. Others questioned why such spam was allowed to accumulate in the first place.

From a process analysis perspective: a) how long did it take? b) how much of the existing AI slop on the platform did that remove? (% wise) c) what steps are you taking to prevent a recurrence? d) how much did it cost you in resources/time/wages to remove it? e) when are you banning AI slop?

I concur. Itch got off way too easily for rapidly delisting games and not issuing refunds/payments to those impacted.

Critics call for stricter enforcement and prevention
Multiple commenters criticized the platform for not banning AI content outright and for allowing such a buildup to occur. Several argued for default filtering options or blanket bans to prevent future accumulation.
“You know you could just make it easier for yourselves amd just have a blanket ban on AI generated games and assets period right?”

Looks like they answered that. Not a no-AI policy, just a no-spam policy. They won't ban AI slop outright.

Big steps, but still hosting the 2026 Epic AI Megajam slopfest game jam though

It would be entrapment… but funny as hell if everyone participating just gets a lifelong ban.

Community presses for clarification on AI policy
Users asked whether the deletion represents a broader no-AI policy or merely cleanup of spam. Itch.io responses indicated it was spam removal rather than an outright ban on AI-generated content.
“is this an executive decision or are you implementing a no-AI policy? would really like a no-AI policy…”

Let’s GOOOOOO now re-list adult games and we’ll be COOKIN, itch!!
-
I mean, unless you plan to ban it won't they just slop it all back on?

All 3,216 members who joined should be banned from the site.
-
Now if only you actually held that view and banned AI slop from the platform...
-
That's good but y'all really need rules that you can enforce to prevent this from happening
-
knowing itch, i am sure they never wanted to delist them. the payment providers are the ones holding them at gunpoint, they lose either way
-
Remonetize adult works and you'll be on a roll babyyy <3
-
Alas… that one’s out of their control. Unless everyone who makes an adult game doesn’t require itch to have a payments processor… (Who are the ones we should actually be yelling at.)
-
I am so pleased someone posted this ahead of me
-
Why was so much allowed there to begin with? Like great, all slop should be erased but also banned to begin with.
-
Policy update? New vetting system? Ai slop titles are often bloat ware so what, a couple of terabytes? What does that mean? You deleted a couple of handfuls of worse offenders? What?

Alright, you've regained my interest as a dev AND a client for now, but more explanation on *what* did you do just now would be appreciated, and what's the plan moving forward?
