Carney's Toronto investment summit closes with Harper's endorsement amid privatization backlash

Two-day summit to lure $1-trillion in foreign capital wraps with Stephen Harper backing the pullout from US trade talks, as critics call it a corporate carve-up of public assets.

What to know

  • Carney's summit courted hundreds of global investors managing roughly $120 trillion in assets, seeking C$1 trillion (about $720 billion) in investment over five years to reduce Canada's dependence on the US amid the trade war.
  • Announcements included opening major airports to private investment, a corporate tax 'mega deduction,' a sovereign internet network, and potential EU visa-rule talks.
  • Critics, including the NDP, protesters and left-leaning commentators, characterize the summit as a privatization push that hands public infrastructure to foreign financiers without guaranteed public benefit.
  • Former PM Stephen Harper's closing endorsement of Carney's US trade-talk walkout drew both praise from business circles and derision from critics who saw a Liberal government leaning on a Conservative figure.

The summit amounts to privatizing public infrastructure and resources without real benefit to ordinary Canadians, undermining sovereignty.
